Understanding the nexus between brain-based therapy and biblical anthropology: A clinical and theological evaluation of EMDR
This dissertation used an interdisciplinary approach to explore the clinical and theological literature regarding trauma, EMDR therapy, and Christian faith-based therapy approaches.
Article Abstract
“Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a widely accepted, empirically supported treatment used in therapeutic settings to treat trauma fragmentation. Debate about its theological alignment leads to questions for some Christian clinicians regarding its use. Additionally, questions about how to incorporate faith into the modality are common. Thus, this dissertation used an interdisciplinary approach to explore the clinical and theological literature. Several major findings emerged from this review. Trauma is described in terms of fragmentation that affects every domain of human functioning. Viewing people through the lens of embodiment is essential to understanding how to treat trauma fragmentation. Parallel models of healing emerged between clinical and theological literature, with movement toward wholeness or shalom being a paramount concept. Additionally, specific theological anthropology perspectives were found to be the primary factor in determining whether a Christian clinician would be open to neuropsychological treatments and to what degree. Finally, a substantial gap was uncovered with regard to faith-integrative literature targeting brain-based therapies. These findings suggest that EMDR can be understood as compatible with an embodied theological anthropology. Several clinical and research implications are suggested for consideration, such as spiritual assessment procedures, training and supervision implications for faith-integrated practice, and interdisciplinary research that supports the broader mission of faith-integrated neuropsychological practice.”
