The integration of nature-based play and EMDR therapies in the aftermath of trauma
EMDR integrates quite well with other therapies, especially with nature-based play and expressive therapies.
Resource Abstract
“This chapter explores the practical play-based applications of the therapeutic use of natural elements with children and adolescents through the integration of nature-based play and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapies. Regardless of the severity of experienced trauma, EMDR and nature-based play therapy can support adaptive resolution through reprocessing the distressing circumstances and traumatic memories. Nature offers stabilization and safety, which is essential throughout the EMDR Therapy process. As part of EMDR therapy, clinicians support clients with the reprocessing of traumatic memories that come with associations, such as memories, images, emotions, body sensations, and cognitions. EMDR integrates quite well with other therapies, especially with nature-based play and expressive therapies. The EMDR reprocessing is often much more effective when delivered outdoors in nature than in an indoor play therapy space. Essentially, EMDR reduces emotionality and sensory intensity associated in the aftermath of trauma, therefore allowing people to live more fully. By design, EMDR is a directive approach that requires the integration of nondirective elements to support practical application with children.”
